Pumpkin (Cucurbitapepo) comes from South America, where it constituted the main food in the diet of indigenous Indians, for centuries. In Mexico and South America, pumpkins and pumpkin seeds were used in food and for medicinal purposes in the time of the Aztecs. Pumpkin seeds can be consumed raw, roasted, ground and in the form of oil.
Virgin cold pressed oil is obtained by mechanical squeezing of roasted seeds of a naked-seeded pumpkin usingmore than hundred years oldhydraulic press, a traditional method proven to give oil with the best nutritional composition and extraordinarily rich taste. Pumpkin oil is extremely rich in unsaturated fatty acids omega 6 and 9, as well as vitamin E and carotenoids which havea strong antioxidant effect.
It is traditionally used in the prevention and treatment of prostate and urinary tract problems. The pumpkin seed oil contains a high concentration of delta-7 sterol compound which inhibits proliferation of prostate cells. It helps lower high cholesterol and treat cardiovascular and digestive system disorders. Research has shown that it improves the quality and quantity of sperm. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, pumpkin seed oil helps fight acne. As it suppresses the dihydrotestosteronehormone, many find it to be the trump card in the fight against baldness.
In contrast to the industrially processed oil that has to pass at least 6 refining stages, the cold-pressed oil has a pleasant smell and a taste of raw food and does not have to undergo any of the refining stages.
Both the virgin and cold-pressed oil is obtained by mechanical pressing of seeds. The difference is that virgin oil is extracted from thermally processed seeds. This process ensures higher stability of oil and a richer flavour.
