Vegetable oils have an important role in human nutrition, principally because of the essential fatty acids and specific ingredients that are minor in their content, but still immensely important for a high-quality nutrition. Pumpkin seed oil belongs to the group of oils having high biological value, thanks to theirfavourable fatty acid content and the presence of many components that have proven to have beneficial effects, such as: anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antimicrobial effects, blocking free radicals and other. Pumpkin seed oil contains more than 80% of unsaturated fatty acids, primarily Omega 6 and 9 fatty acids. Moreover, this oil is rich in phytosterols (Δ-7 sterols) having various pharmacological effects.
Pumpkin seed oil is traditionally used in the prevention and treatment of prostate and urinary tract problems. The statistics have shown that 60% of men aged between 40 and 59 suffer from a benign prostate hyperplasia. This number reaches 75% among men aged60 and above. Aging coincides with the decrease in testosterone levels. This causes overproduction of dihydrotestosterone, the hormone being the major cause of prostate enlargement. Unfortunately, aside from a number of unpleasant symptoms, such as frequent and painful urination, enlarged prostate also brings along an increased risk of urinary tract infections and as a growing number of experts believe, the prostate cancer. Phytosterols from pumpkin seed oil prevent the proliferation of prostate cells, and hence its ability to successfully fight the problems related to an enlarged prostate. Since it inhibits dihydrotestosterone, it is also considered to be the trump card in fighting hair-loss. Research has shown that it improves the quality and quantity of sperm. Cold pressed pumpkin oil equally helps with regulating high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular and digestive system problems.
