The medicinal and nutritive value of grapes has been known for thousands of years. There is a growing interest among the scientific community for the polyphenolic properties of compounds originating from grapes, bearing in mind the numerous testimonies of their beneficial effect on human health. The known phenomenon of low rate of cardiovascular disease incidence in France is connected with the habitual daily consumption of wine in this country. The prevailing number of studies came to the same conclusion: daily consumption of small quantities of red wine reduces the risk of heart diseases by around 40%.
Further studies have shown that it is actually the non-alcoholic ingredient of the wine rich in polyphenols that produces this phenomenon. These compounds have a powerful antioxidant property and as such, they reduce the damage caused to blood vessels by free radicals.
By improving blood circulation, the grape seed extract has a preventive, and as assumed, also the therapeutic effect on a number of heart diseases:
- varicose veins,
- chronic venous insufficiency,
- capillary fragility,
- complications related to diabetes (damage to the nerves and eyes).
Antioxidant activity is also essential for people exposed to stress and heavy physical exertionor sports. The use of this product is also recommended for children being under physical exertion or recovering from illness. Proanthocyanidinsare capable of protecting normal cells from damage caused by tobacco or chemotherapy. The grape seed elements prevent the impact of enzymes that destroy collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and other tissue structures. In this manner, they slow down the aging processes and tissue decay.
"...this extract can be found on a number of international markets as a supplement to diets, in the form of tablets or capsules. It is used by persons having problems with heart and blood vessels (atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or poor circulation), including the diabetes-related complications (such as nerves or eye damage, macular degeneration and swelling after an injury or surgery), as well as for cancer prevention and wound healing. Some of these effects have been demonstrated in in vivo models. It has accordingly been found that this seedextract improves the post-ischemic function ofleft ventricle, lessens theproportionsof myocardial infarction and reduces the ventricular fibrillation and tachycardia. The reduced concentration of oxygenspecies in the heart perfusion has also been noted.”
