Pomegranate is an ancient perennial plant species of the Punicaceae family that is considered a “miracle fruit” because the seeds are consumed as food, juice, and functional food. Modern pharmacological and clinical evidence has highlighted the wide medical use of parts of the pomegranate fruit and its juice. Globally, increasing consumer demand for pomegranate has been observed, mainly due to scientific evidence related to its functional and health characteristics.
Pomegranate juice is superior to other fruit juices due to its enhanced source of dietary polyphenols with potential antioxidant effects attributed to its tannin, anthocyanin, and flavonoid content. The presence of these beneficial phytochemicals is critical in determining the quality of the juice and is directly related to its widespread health benefits, i.e., obesity/diabetes management.
Recent research has shown that pomegranate extracts selectively inhibit the growth of breast, prostate, colon, and lung cancer cells in culture. It contains numerous vitamins, of which vitamin C stands out by its content, which is necessary for healthy and shiny skin and a strong immune system. It has been reported that the antioxidant activity of pomegranate is higher than that of red wine, green tea al., grapes/cranberries, grapefruit, and orange juice. In addition to antioxidant activity, pomegranate compounds are attributed to antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-atherosclerotic properties. Moreover, the role of unsaturated fatty acids in pomegranate seeds in preventing cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and asthma and in reducing cholesterol levels has recently been highlighted.
